I showed my mom your entry about the landmines and asked her what she thought was the most pressing issue in the US--she said first thing that came to mind was the oil spill. I've been meaning to write about this so here goes!
There are a lot of things in this world where I wish it could be easily fixed. The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is one of those things.
I am sad that those 11 oil rig workers were killed in the explosion. And I can't believe how much oil has poured out into the ocean because of the explosion. And it has almost been two months and it is still not under control? To me that is unacceptable. Of course it is hard for me to judge because I am not an engineer who would know how much it takes to fix something like that. I think it needs to be fixed no matter what the cost. I don't think the environment can afford to undergo man-made tragedies such as that.
I also think that BP company should shoulder all costs. In some way BP is responsible for the damage, either because of faulty preventative devices that didn't prevent the explosion, or because they own the rig, I believe that they should pay for it. It would be as if I, an individual, accidentally started a forest fire that burned hundreds of thousands of acres. I imagine I would be expected to pay for it somehow. BP might need to borrow money, but sometimes that is what it takes and there is no shame in that.
I just wish that with today's technology, we could somehow fix this so that no more wildlife, people, plants, etc needs to go through this.
Below is a link to BP website that describes their recovery efforts:

Right. What do you mom think about my post? Any comments? About my writing style. The topic. Yes, as an individual, I am concern about the oil spill too. Sometimes, things re preventable. Sometimes, not. And its just sad that we as individuals cannot help much, especially in such big cases like the oil spill which will affect the everyone in the world.
I think everything begin at home. Let's try to encourage everyone around is to do the same too. I always nag at Jun because he turns on the TV but he doesn't watch it, which annoys me a lot because its a waste of electricity. I supposed small steps are the first step towards a better ecological world.
My mom liked your post, and she commented to me that it was sad that kids have to worry about that. She told me to imagine what it would be like to not be able to play in the woods behind our house as a kid for fear of land mines. I used to play outside most of the day in the summer time--we had our fair share of worries like snakes, bears, etc. but in general, we were very safe. It would have broken my heart to not be able to explore the forest.
I agree about the electricity. Phil usually falls asleep to the TV (it helps him fall asleep) and I turn it off when I wake up. Otherwise we are fairly good about electricity, like unplugging certain things like fans when we are not at home. But we do leave one light on downstairs at night time so that we can see if we get up, and I think it deters people from trying to break into the apartment when we're sleeping.
