In Pursuit of Green Tea

A cup of Japanese green tea a day, keeps the doctor away. Green tea, like apples keeps the doctors away. Ask any researchers in the world and they will proudly tell you how a cup of green tea can improvise your health remarkably. Like apples, green tea contains high amounts of antioxidant and Vitamin C, which we all consume through fruits and vegetables in our daily lives. Yet, when it comes to fruits and vegetables, we have our own likes and dislikes and sometimes, unavoidably, that prevents our ability to absorb the daily intake of Vitamin C fully.

However, the deprivation of Vitamin C can be conquered by just consuming a cup of green tea, as a cup of the miracle beverage itself contains 436 mg of Vitamin C, 7 times more than what we are supposed to consume daily from our servings of fruits and vegetables. What’s more that is no real risk of overdosing because excess of vitamins are released through body fluids. On top of that, if you are like me, who likes my cup of miracle beverage with a taste of zesty summer flavor, add a slice of lemon. Simple, easy and inexpensive way to make sure that you gain the proper amount of antioxidants and Vitamin C. Strengthen your immune system and decrease cholesterol by consuming a cup of green tea now.

Australian Open

Currently the Australian Open is happening in the tennis world. I usually follow Venus and Serena Williams as they play. Unfortunately, Venus had to retire from this competition due to an injury. And Serena wasn't able to play at all because she had injured her foot and needs time to heal properly.

I haven't been able to see a lot of matches, but it appears as though the US is falling behind some other players. But it is great to watch athletes from all over to apply their skills. I am impressed with a man from Canada, Milos Raonic who has made it very far. I have not seen many Canadian tennis players so it is nice to see a variety of countries represented in the final rounds.

I have "played" tennis a few times. I am not very good because I don't have a lot of endurance, and the past few years either Phil or I have been injured so we were not able to play during the summer. But maybe we can play this summer!

The next big sporting event in America is the Super Bowl. It is on February 6 and the two teams that play are Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers. I do not care too much about football, but I've been a little more interested in it this year. I think I will root for the Pittsburgh Steelers, I used to work with a woman who came from Pittsburgh and her enthusiasm for the Steelers rubbed off on me. I think the biggest sporting event in American sports for me is Baseball World Series in the fall. For International sporting event I would say tennis.

The Asian Cheese

Somewhat square in appearance
Feels soft and silky.
Discovered by the Chinese over 2000 years ago
Loved by vegans
Guess what am I?

I am Tofu.
Sometimes known as the "Cheese of Asia" as I resemble a block of farmer's cheese. However, believe me, I taste entirely different from my friend, The Cheese. Neither do you ever see me being given out as tasting samples at supermarkets nor being eaten while sipping wine at parties like The Cheese.

I will tell you why although it is going to hurt my feelings and pride.

The reason is because I taste bland.
Yes, bland, as in I can never excites those tiny thousands taste buds in your mouth.
I am not strong in taste. Therefore not very interesting to be put inside your mouth unless you are a vegetarian.

Nevertheless, I am proud to say that I benefit you as well. I am highly rich in calcium, protein and iron. I have the ability to lower your cholesterol by 30% if you consume me on a daily basis. I am also easily digestible, meaning that I am good for you if you are on diet. Although I can never compete in taste with The Cheese, but thanks to the creativeness of many chefs, I taste equally as good if I am blended in with either savory, sweet or spicy dishes.

The next time you make a trip to the supermarket, invest in me.
You will learn to treasure me as you get to know me!
Cheers to Tofu!! I mean cheers to Me!!

Happy New Year 2011...Recap of 2010

Like everyone else I am excited about the new year! According to the Asian calendar, it is the year of rabbit! When I think of rabbit, the image of long ears, white fur, fluffy wool-like tail appears in my head. Not forgetting the twitching nose! Last year, the year of tiger (2010) was a tough year for almost everyone around the world I believe.

In mid January, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake occurred in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti causing the death of 230,000 or more lives. An 8.8 magnitude earthquake also occurred in Chile in late February, triggering a tsunami over the Pacific Ocean. The earthquake was reported to be one of the largest in recorded history.

Eyjafjallajokull, the volcano which had been relative quiet for over past 400 years finally erupted on April 12th in southern Iceland impairing world's air traffic. According to experts, we should expect more frequent voluminous eruptions in the future because of the ice reductions that cause the active generation of magma.

6 days later, the oil platform located in the Gulf of Mexico exploded, polluting the sea, thus injuring the innocent underwater creatures, and prompting international debate and doubts about the practice and procedures of offshore drilling. Strangely, this incident had gained lots of nicknames such as 'Macondo Blowout', 'The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill', 'BP Oil Spill', and 'Louisiana Oil Spill'. It is useless to give so many nicknames to this oil platform incident without having a solution to it.

Then came the soccer fever all the footballers enthusiasts had been waiting for! World Cup in South Africa for a month beginning from June 11 to July 11. Japan did not make it to the semifinals due to penalty loses to Paraguay with the score of 3-5. I thought Brazil was going to win it but Spain won the World Cup.Was World Cup in South Africa a success or failure? From my point of view, it was a success (due to reasons I won't discuss here)

Malaria subsequently flood. Mosquitoes are lethal. Much more malicious than weapons come to think of it. Welcome to Pakistan, a country that lacks of resources at the national level to combat malaria. The outbreak started in the early 1970s. Like many Asian countries, Pakistan also has heavy monsoon rains much to the pleasure of the mosquitoes of course. More than one million are displaced by the floods and they battle  malaria like a worn-out soldier.

On a brighter note,in Myanmar, the junta freed Aung San Suu Kyi who had experienced house arrest for 21years. Internationally, her release has been described as a "Mandela moment", comparing to the day in 1990 when Nelson Mandela walked free from South Africa's prison. However, she argues that Myanmar is in a tougher situation than South Africa. South Africa had already made some movement towards democracy when Mandela was released. Here, they are nowhere near that. There are still 1000s who share the same belief as her in prison.

10days later, November 23rd, North Korea army decided to throw some bombs to South Korea. The incident caused an escalation of tension on the Korean Peninsula and without doubt prompted widespread international condemnation towards North Korea.

Although the world economy will technically be out of recession, many countries will still be in debt and subjected high taxation to citizens like you and me!!! International co-operation between each and every country is a must. Citizens like us need to stay strong and positive. I hope the recap of 2010 will remind us that history always repeat itself because we humans do not learn from it. If only we learn and mend our errs.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

My New Year's Eve was spent at my parent's house, where I helped prepare the food for our New Year's Eve feast (mini pizzas, vegetables and hummus, chips, crackers, etc). Then we played card games and board games. After that we watched TV until I left for Phil's dad's house where my in-laws were gathered. I got there just in time for the traditional TV watching of the New Year ball drop in New York's time square. New Year's Day was actually a Christmas celebration at Phil's dad's.

Things I learned in 2010:

People grow faster when they are challenged by life's circumstances.
If you worry too much about failing, it increases your chance of failure.
Don't worry so much - count your blessings.
Be positive!
